I designed a website for Queens Public Library to support immigrants adjusting to life in a new country. The platform brings together language support, cultural programs, and essential resources in an accessible space to help users feel informed and connected.

Challenge

Immigrants often struggle to find trustworthy language support, community programs, and essential resources, leading to feelings of isolation and uncertainty.

Approach

Develop a centralized, easy-to-navigate digital platform that brings together key services and resources, helping users find the support they need in one accessible space.

Principles

Prioritize accessibility, cultural sensitivity, and simplicity to create an inclusive and welcoming experience for diverse user backgrounds.

I designed the homepage to showcase all active programs in a scrollable, map-like layout: moving away from traditional carousels. With bi-directional drag gestures, especially on mobile, the experience feels more spatial and exploratory, encouraging users to freely navigate what’s live.

* Book of the Month is a monthly program that brings English learners together through shared reading and discussion.

I wanted the interaction to feel light and approachable: on desktop, users can hover to reveal a short book summary, while on mobile, a simple tap within the carousel does the trick. I also added a calendar icon that links directly to the full schedule: so users always know when each book will be read.

I structured the Programs section around a dynamic calendar to give users a clear, intuitive way to explore all ongoing and upcoming events. The goal was to reduce cognitive load and surface key details quickly: so users can scan what's happening, tap into what interests them, and feel confident navigating through the schedule.
